EASTER ACCESSORY FROM ABARA

Dear Reader,

It’s Easter everybody!

In case you don’t know, Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. In Christian tradition, Jesus was crucified on a Friday (known as Good Friday), and then entombed; On the third day, which is now celebrated as Easter Sunday, he rose from the dead. This miracle is considered the cornerstone of the Christian faith, as it signifies the victory of life over death, and the promise of eternal life. Easter has since come to be a celebration of rebirth, renewal, and the arrival of spring, and is celebrated by many people around the world of various cultures and religions. The themes of renewal and rebirth gave birth to the tradition of Easter Eggs.

Eggs in general are a traditional symbol of fertility and rebirth; and so it is for the Easter Egg; However, Easter eggs (which are hollow) also symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus, from which Jesus was resurrected. Supporting this idea is the ancient tradition for staining Easter eggs red, symbolic of the blood of Christ shed at his cruel crucifixion. The practice of decorating eggshells is pre-Christian, and decorated ostrich eggs have been discovered in Africa which are 60,000 years old. In the early cultures of Mesopotamia and Crete, eggs were associated with death and rebirth, as well as with kingship, with decorated ostrich eggs commonly placed in graves of the ancient Sumerians and Egyptians.

Quite unrelated to any of the Christian traditions, Easter Island, off Chile, is the world's most secluded inhabited island, with a population of just 5000 people, famed for its mysterious monolithic statutes. Known to the indigenous people as Rapa Nui, It was named Easter Island by the European explorer Jacob Roggeveen, who first saw the island on Easter Sunday, in 1722.
